The Beatitudes
from Frank Lima's The Beatitudes

for David Shapiro

Blessed is Lucifer being flung from a roof top
By the angels for biting God's ear off

Blessed is Lucifer for providing
Hell when I cannot sleep

Blessed is the prayer
That has come to New York
With a box stuffed with the future

Blessed is the Eucharist
The bread of old dead men
Who make mistakes

Blessed is the Jew
Being blown to bits
To become the lilac of God

Blessed are the terrorists
The follicles of sadness and envy

Blessed are the homosexuals
Irrigating the arts in America

Blessed are the ells
In the perforated scum bags
Of the Ku Klux Klan

Blessed are the words of Moses and Aaron
Swallowing their vanity
So bread and water could fall from the sky

Blessed are the fat Irish nuns
In their flaky habits
Smelling like lard catechizing
"those darty little Pat'ta Ricans"

Blessed is the Holy Catholic Church
Preserving the Roman Empire
Accepting gold for the sale of the Jews

Blessed are the priests
Massacring the innocence of boys
Who hide in the belfry from God

Blessed is almighty God
Defecating
In the mouths of those priests

Blessed is my cirrhotic mother
Playing with the little dogs of cancer
Reading this and paying me with pain
Blessed is the word of God
That I can not believe
In order to believe

Blessed are the tunnels in my soul
With what is left of the Talmud gasping for air
The Catholic air conditioners cannot cool

Blessed are the times I spent in hell
Digging out the roses and worms
You left in my body

Blessed are the days of my life
I have spent defying Your word
So I may never stop the practice of living
With the small spoon of faith You left me

Blessed is the portable dildo You gave me
On my fifty seventh birthday that my wife
Enjoys with or without my presence

Blessed are the cells
Of my children
The furnaces of
My day to day life on earth

Blessed are my children
Whose hearts
I have housed in a bomb shelter
Of love and kindness

Blessed are the ants who wear watches
Who make wine from the minutes and the hours
I have spent with my children laughing and singing
