Two Poems

Steve Malamude

Once I Expressed

Once I expressed
myself as someone
who had summered
with some artists

when poverty was
a thing of youth
and shyness
cost me nothing

o for the puzzle
of personalities
copping their buzz
on a regular basis

at the first note
of character
I was not floated
by art any more.

I Got To Know

Spring rain
washes the arrow
out of the head
of the snowman

it is the sign
that our case
has been
diagnosed

one has
another day
to acquiesce
I got to know

my colognes
this morning
and they
got to know me.
